Retatrutide is an investigational injectable developed by American pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. The drug targets three intestinal hormones – GLP-1, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and pancreatic hormone. Preliminary studies indicate it could help individuals lose up to 25% of their total weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the drug is being promoted digitally as the next Ozempic.

However, doctors and pharmacists have warned that the distribution of what remains an unapproved drug in the United Kingdom is worrisome and could lead to users administering products of unknown origin.

Retatrutide is not a controlled substance, but promotion and distribution can still violate pharmaceutical, advertising, and customer regulations, potentially leading to fines, prosecution or imprisonment.

Based on TikTok, the service has taken down violative content and prohibited related hashtags and search suggestions. The company said it was committed to keeping the service secure and allocating resources in strengthening compliance measures.

Research also found groups with up to nine thousand participants marketing the experimental drug using Telegram's integrated discovery tool, which functions like a public directory. Entering “retatrutide” immediately displays groups with thousands of members, filled with photos of weight loss, glowing testimonials and detailed guides for mixing or injecting at residence.

Within minutes of joining one community, a seller posted WhatsApp details, where most purchases take place. The seller provided an guidebook and promised delivery within two days. When asked whether the substance was authentic, one vendor responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a image of a supposed testing documentation. None inquired about body mass, medical conditions or past usage.

Inside these communities, posts display black plastic packages with postal service stickers, claiming to contain fresh supplies. One message read: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Customers can choose between powder vials, prepared at home with sterile water, or pre-filled injectors typically priced at 160 pounds for 20 milligrams. When asked how much time a pen should last, vendors give contradictory responses varying between a several days to “depends on your body”.

A spokesperson for the messaging service said it regularly moderated dangerous material on its service including content that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization added that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

“People are administering materials they cannot confirm. Although the research behind this drug is valid, these digital versions may not contain what they advertise,” stated Jason Murphy, the head of pharmacy at a pharmacy service.

Dr Crystal Wyllie of Asda Online Doctor linked the surge in interest to current cost increases for authorized weight-loss medications such as Mounjaro. “With costs increasing, patients are using social media. But fake injections are highly dangerous. You cannot know what’s contained or whether the conditions they were produced in was clean,” she explained.
